A room made entirely of smooth, similar surfaces can feel flat, even if the colours are nice. Texture – the feel and look of different materials – adds depth and interest.
Wood brings warmth and grain, metal adds sleekness or an industrial touch, fabric softens and absorbs sound, glass reflects light. When you mix them thoughtfully, the space feels more layered and complete. For example, a wooden table, metal lamp, soft upholstered chairs and a woven basket together feel richer than everything in the same finish.
You don’t need to overdo it. Just make sure there’s a balance: something smooth, something soft, something with a bit of roughness or pattern.
Your hands and eyes both appreciate the variety, even if you don’t consciously think, “Ah, texture.”
