When you move into a home that has had previous occupants, you don’t really know how many copies of the keys exist – with former owners, tenants, domestic help, neighbours, tradespeople, or even old estate agents.
Changing the locks (or at least rekeying them) gives you a clear, fresh starting point. From that moment, you control who has access. You can decide who gets spare keys and keep a list if you want to be extra organised.
It’s a relatively small cost compared to the value of peace of mind. Even if everyone before you was perfectly trustworthy, you have no control over where old keys may end up over time.
One quick lock change, and you know for sure that the only keys that work are the ones you’ve given out.
