Our noses often detect trouble before our eyes do. A persistent musty, damp or “old basement” smell in a particular corner, cupboard or room can be a clue that moisture is present somewhere nearby.
It might be a small leak in a pipe inside a wall, condensation behind furniture, damp rising from the floor, or water sitting in a hidden spot. Even if you don’t see obvious stains yet, that smell means something isn’t drying properly.
Instead of masking it with air fresheners, it’s worth investigating: checking under sinks, moving furniture slightly away from walls, looking behind cupboards, or even calling a professional if you suspect a larger issue.
Catching moisture early can prevent mould growth, damage to wood and plaster, and health problems for the people living there.
