You might plan to stay in the home for a long time, but life changes: jobs move, families grow, circumstances shift. Thinking about future resale doesn’t mean you can’t personalise your space; it just keeps you from making decisions that would scare off most buyers later.
If you knock down every wall to create one huge bedroom, or build a super-specific feature that only fits your hobby, it may reduce the home’s flexibility. Extremely bold, permanent choices – like very niche tiling everywhere or built-ins that dominate a room – can be expensive to undo.
By keeping layout relatively practical and avoiding choices that would require major rework, you protect your future self. You don’t have to renovate again just to make the place saleable.
A good balance: design for your life now, but keep at least an eye on what an average buyer would see as functional and appealing.
