A completely silent home in an otherwise lively neighbourhood can sometimes signal that no one is inside, especially if it stays like that for days. Leaving a radio or TV on low volume, preferably on a talk station, can create the impression that someone is present.
From outside, the faint sound of voices or background noise suggests normal activity. It also means sudden noises – like a gate or door being fiddled with – are less likely to be obvious to anyone attempting mischief. They don’t know if someone might step out at any moment.
Of course, this isn’t a stand-alone security system, and you don’t want to waste energy unnecessarily. But for shorter trips or when combined with timers on lights, it becomes another small layer of “occupied” signals.
It’s a simple trick, especially useful if you don’t have smart home tech.
