The Quiet Art of Making a House Feel Like Home

There’s a moment — usually late in the evening...

If you can access a loft or top storage area directly under the roof, standing there with the main light off (during daylight) can reveal tiny points of light where there shouldn’t be any. These pinpricks or thin lines of light are places where gaps exist in the roofing or around fittings.

A small gap might not leak much in light rain, but under driving wind and heavy storms, water can work its way in. Over time, that can damage wood, insulation and ceilings.

Seeing light isn’t always bad – some vents are designed that way – but unexpected beams or dots where tiles or sheets should overlap tightly are a warning.

This simple visual test is an easy way to spot potential leak points without climbing on the roof itself.
