Heavy, dark curtains can be great for blocking light at night, but during the day they often stay partly closed because they’re bulky to move or make the room feel dim and formal. As a result, you might subconsciously avoid using that space in daylight or always need extra lamps on.

Lighter curtains – in colour and fabric – let more daylight in even when they’re drawn for privacy. They’re also easier to pull fully open, encouraging you to actually do it. The room feels brighter, softer and more inviting for daytime activities like reading, working or relaxing.

If you still need blackout at night, you can combine light sheers with a separate layer of heavier drapes. That way, you get the best of both worlds: cheerful by day, cosy and dark by night.

Changing curtains can genuinely change how often and when you enjoy a room.
